Are you struggling with the BIG decision?
Do you have a loved one who needs some assistance with everyday living that is best done in a different environment than their home?
To add to the troubles, the questions is always “..and what are we going to do with the House?”
Hi, this is Mark Mehling, and just a couple years ago I had those same struggles with my mother-in-law. Sadly, she was not able to take care of herself and the house she lived in due to the onset of Alzheimer’s.
When we finally were able to get her to a beautiful assisted living facility (ask me where if you are looking for a great place here in Port Orange, Florida), we couldn’t figure out what to do with the house.
The home was in another city and we couldn’t find an alternative other than either selling it cheap (look at the real estate market right now), or letting it sit empty.
We couldn’t find anyone qualified to watch the property and, since the insurance on vacant property changes, we had even more problems. We ended up selling it, although we would have gotten more for it had we held onto it through this real estate crisis.
Now move forward a couple years. The housing crisis has deepened, houses aren’t nearly worth what they were back then, and most other items have gotten more expensive. So the house is still a problem. But it doesn’t have to be.
Why not hold onto the family house?
There are a lot of advantages to that idea.
You will always have a great place to stay when you come down to visit. You may be preserving memories, not just for you but also for those you love.
You don’t have to worry about emptying the house into storage or selling everything at a loss because you have to sell the house.
You could also wait for the real estate market to rebound and then sell the property at a much better price.
When I saw the challenges that families were having with this decision, I realized that someone needed to step in and help. Although I have connections with various Assisted Living Facilities, that is not my real expertise. I KNOW HOUSES.
If you live in Volusia or Flagler counties in Florida, I now have an answer for that challenging question: “…What do we do with the house?”
